What Is a Core Update?
Core updates are wide sweeping changes to Google’s ranking algorithm systems that aim to enhance the quality and relevance of search results. These updates are not aimed at specific content types or guideline violations but are intended to improve Google’s ability to highlight valuable, high-quality content.
Core updates can impact rankings across all industries and content categories.
What to monitor during the rollout
The update is rolling out as of June 30th and can take up to 3 weeks to complete. So during this rollout, you will want your team to monitor the following:
- Ranking Changes: Track important keywords daily and watch for major position shifts, which can occur out of the blue
- Traffic Trends: Monitor your traffic in Google Analytics or similar tools to note any drastic shifts.
- Search Console Data: Use Google Search Console to monitor impressions and clicks and tie in any major changes with changes in the rankings where possible.
- Competitor Performance: If possible, monitor the performance of your competitors and note any new ones that may pop-up during the rollout.
What to do during a core update
One of the key things not to do during a rollout is to make drastic changes based on changes to rankings. You can expect to see fluctuations, good and bad, during this time so instead do the following:
- Monitor as mentioned above
- Report on any changes to inform a plan post rollout
- Continue as usual with your strategy until the rollout completes and then adjust accordingly
