With a 25-year legacy built on the concept of ‘couples play’, Pulse & Cocktails wanted to attract a younger demographic by embracing diversity and evolving their online presence. They prioritised the development of an eCommerce platform catering to both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts. However, their vision extended beyond just transactions, aiming to create an inclusive digital space offering valuable resources and fostering a community around sexual health and wellbeing.
Our strategy focused on building an inclusive site by prioritising a user-friendly design. We addressed challenges and enhanced efficiency by emphasising speed, scalability and mobile optimisation, alongside improving backend functionality. To appeal to a younger demographic, we recognised the need for a complete website overhaul. Our process began with a thorough examination of the site's architecture, ensuring optimal performance for SEO while prioritising smooth navigation for easy browsing and purchasing. Once we established the core structure, we moved to wireframing to ensure easy access to all relevant content, facilitating a seamless journey from page to page.
To elevate Pulse & Cocktails’ presence in a competitive online marketplace, we crafted a sleek and modern front-end design. This design was complemented by simple yet effective micro transitions, enhancing the overall user experience and setting them apart from their competitors.
One of the critical technical components involved integrating with Cybertill, an EPOS/WMS system, to manage orders and stock. This required utilising SOAP API for order/data transmission and an ODBC connection to monitor real-time stock levels across all stores/warehouses. This integration was essential for efficient inventory management and order processing, ensuring customers receive accurate, up-to-date information on product availability.
Additionally, we incorporated various third-party APIs, such as Stripe for Apple Pay and Google Pay, Royal Mail API for order details and label printing, Google API for maps and shop reviews, and getaddress.io for swift address lookup via postcodes. Another significant challenge was migrating data from the existing shop system to a format compatible with WooCommerce. This included transferring user data, product details, SKUs, images, metadata and blog content.
For any site migration, our SEO team stands ready to manage a smooth transition while fine-tuning the website to achieve optimal performance. Critical pages underwent continuous monitoring post-migration, with a focus on refining metadata to reflect unique selling points. We prioritised internal linking to ensure a smooth customer journey, while also conducting a thorough review of on-page content to ensure its quantity and alignment with SEO best practices. Our team optimised URL structures for search engine friendliness and placed a premium on mobile responsiveness. Additionally, we fine-tuned onsite imagery, page speed, and internal response codes to boost the user experience. The end result? A comprehensive improvement in site performance and user experience.
